K-8 Math Adoption work from 2008-2009

Board Presentation - April 13, 2009

With the blessing of the district’s Instructional Materials Committee (IMC) firmly in hand, leaders of the K-12 Mathematics Adoption Committee made their formal recommendation to the School Board to consider adopting Math Connects as the new K-8 curriculum for the upcoming school year. The presentation included a recap of the extensive work of the 47-member committee to arrive at the recommended curriculum. Board members were each presented with a textbook for their review, along with an overview of the features and benefits of the recommended curriculum. In addition to providing a new level of consistency with a K-8 curriculum, Math Connects features outstanding online support for parents, students and teachers, a wide variety of assessments and varied components to support all learners. The publisher offers a strong professional development component including online math content and implementation videos. School Board members will take action on the recommendation during their April 27 meeting.

Teachers Pilot Proposed Math Curriculum February 9th - March 6th, 2009

Elementary and middle school students in 35 classrooms across Central Valley will help shape the future of the math curriculum offered in the district, as the next step in the year-long curriculum adoption process gets underway. February 9th, 25 elementary teachers and 10 middle school teachers began a 4 week comprehensive pilot of the top two ranked math curricula at each level. The pilot follows four months of hard work by the Math Curriculum Adoption Committee, which used a pre-screen rubric to identify Math Connects and Math Expressions to pilot in grades K-5 and Math Connects and Holt Mathematics for piloting in grades 6-8.
