Courses: Language Arts

Students graduating from CVHS must earn 3 credits (6 semesters) of  Language Arts classes.  Students will be expected to read, write, think, speak and listen extensively in every course in this department.

*3 credits for CVHS graduation-4 credits required for 4-year college*

 PRE-ADVANCED PLACEMENT & ADVANCED PLACEMENT

Pre-Advanced Placement is a College Board program created to provide teachers with content-specific strategies for building a rigorous and challenging curriculum.  Teachers employ Pre-AP strategies to prepare students to succeed in future courses in AP and other areas of study.  Students will develop and practice critical thinking skills, discussion skills, complex writing skills, and work with literature that will prepare them for success in AP courses and on AP exams.  To facilitate the best possible outcome for students who later choose AP courses and complete AP exams, it is important to begin the intensive and rigorous study now.  Placement in these courses is dependent upon a screening process.

The Advanced Placement Program is designed to allow students to take college-level courses while they are in high school.  These courses are taught by high school teachers who follow curriculum guides established by college faculty through the College Board Advanced Placement Program.

Students who score ‘3’ or above on a five-point scale are usually given college credit at colleges and universities across the state and country.  Each college defines what scores it accepts for credit or course placement.

Expectations for academic performance, behavior, maturity and time commitment are at the college level.  Parents and students should expect more reading and homework and expect to be evaluated as a college student.

Pre AP courses are offered English Literature and Composition in grades 9 and 10.  AP English course are offered for English Literature and English Composition.  AP offerings are dependent upon enrollment.
