Course Description: Students will learn basic weight training strategy, progression of weight techniques, learn musculoskeletal dynamics of lifting, and will learn to perform each major lift with proper body position. Students will learn the responsibilities of spotting free weight lifting and will learn the correct spotting techniques. Students will learn the components of fitness and the relationship between cardiovascular fitness and muscular strength. Students may design personal fitness/lifting plans and may be required to update and follow these plans on a weekly basis. Fitness testing and max lifting testing will take place during the semester to assess progress of the student. Objectives: 1. To understand basic weight training strategy 2. To understand musculoskeletal dynamics of lifting 3. To be able to spot each major lift correctly and understand the major responsibilities of the spotter. 4. To be able to perform each major lift with safe and correct body form. 5. To have an awareness of progressive weight techniques and equipment 6. To understand the concepts of muscular strength, flexibility, and strength EALRS Benchmark 1: 1.2, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 Benchmark 2: 2.3 Benchmark 3: 3.3 Benchmark 4: 4.2 Course Requirements/Assignments: 1. Students will be dressed down, stretch, and participate in a free weight lifting program each day they are in class. 2. Suplimentary or auxiliary lifts will be taught and performed to augment the muscle groups being worked that day. 3. Safety rules and proper lifting and spotting techniques will be taught and enforced so that safe lifting is a number one consideration. 4. Students will be required to know muscular anatomy as it relates to weight training and will be tested on the material. 5. Students will be required to design or to follow a prescribed progressive program each week and adjustments to their program will be made as they progress. Grading Policy: Letter grades generally reflect mastery of skills as defined by state Grade Level Expectations as Essential Academic Learning Requirements. Attendance 50% of the grade Attitude effort and adherence to safety rules 30% Written quizzes, tests, and assignments 20% Grades will follow the adopted district high school grading scale: |
