This course is the first in a series of two-dimensional studio art classes in which individual artworks are created. The students in this class will build upon the art knowledge and background acquired in Art Fundamentals plus work with many drawing techniques using a variety of mediums. The students will learn to draw realistically in pencil, ink, and pastels in a variety of styles with emphasis on values, perceptions, and evaluation. The elements of Art and the Principles of Design will be taught through composition. The drawing class provides the skills and understanding of art basics needed for studio drawing, watercolor and oil painting classes. A portfolio will be created. Supplies will be required. A typed research project is part of the curriculum.

This course teaches students to expand their knowledge and skill and to become better observes while drawing from the real world. The course teaches students to understand and apply art concepts and vocabulary in order to communicate and solve problems. Students will learn to organize elements of art and principles of design into artistic composition. They will develop skills of craftsmanship to produce quality work. They will learn to create, present and evaluate artworks.

Students will be asked to produce a technique practice lesson followed by completed drawings which demonstrate understanding of the various Elements and Principles of art. To be successful students need to be able to read, write legibly in clear and concise sentences and have a desire to draw and explore their abilities. A research paper is required for students who wish to earn a grade of B or better. Policies for Make-up or Late Work

Teacher Comments:

Creation is a singular event. It takes place in the innermost recessed of one’s self. It functions best when you are alone, quiet and introspective. It is a product of your total ownership. It takes place on the right side of the brain where words and language are not produced. Because of this, talking while trying to create a drawing is impossible and copying someone’s work (plagiarism) is not creative and not true drawing.

Thank you for your support of the arts. Hopefully you will have a creative and fun experience.
