Jewelry and Metalsmithing Central Valley High School Mrs. Carson Advanced Assignments #1 Lost Wax or Centrifugal Casting Using wax sheet, wire, block, or a recycled wax wafer, create a wax prototype to be cast. · You must design and carve the wax yourself. · The piece must not be too heavy to be wearable. Complete this project for 30 points. Don’t forget to fill out a worksheet and complete the workbook lesson for each of the following assignments. #2 Bezel Setting: Fabricate a bezel mounting for a piece of jewelry of your choice. Fine silver bezel wire must be used around the stone and soldered in place but you could combine this with a casting if you wish. Follow the directions on your Advanced Packet for details. Assorted cabochon stones are available in class for you to purchase or you may bring in your own. Remember that bezel wire is soldered together with hard solder only. #3 Faceted Stone Set: fabricate or cast a piece of jewelry using 5mm faceted stone and a pre-made 4 prong mounting (called a finding). Follow the directions in your Advanced Packet. The specialized tools for setting the stone are located at the teacher’s jeweler’s bench. #4 Channel Inlay: This assignment requires the use of the lapidary saw and wheels. Fabricate or cast a piece of jewelry which will have a solid piece of stone cut to fit into a channel. Follow the detailed instructions in your Advanced Packet. Only one piece of stone needs to be cut to fit the channel for credit. Remember that crushed inlay receives no credit for this assignment. Assorted slabs of stones are located in the cabinet under the lapidary Wheels or you may bring in your own. Extra credit may be received if you cut and fit more than one stone. #5 Technique of your Choice: This project must be worthy of 10 hours of work for full credit. #6 Peer Tutoring: Turn in your Peer Tutoring Log sheet filled out completely with the names of students you have helped, how you have tutored them and comments on what you also learned. There will be no credit unless you keep this record current. Appendix 1. Supplies for only one casting are part of your Arts Fee. Additional castings are at additional cost to you 2. Peer tutoring and written makeup report may not be used in combination leaving a grade to be based on only three projects. 3. Second level advanced students will work in an independent study situation where each assignment is set up between the student and teacher on an individual basis and points are assigned prior to starting the assignment. |
