Central Valley High School’s “Bear Bot 3”
Competes in the US First Robotics Competition
Students from Central Valley High School traveled to Seattle, WA for the Seattle Microsoft Regional US First Robotics Tournament the last weekend of March before Spring Break. The team’s robot qualified by meeting all specifications and placed 41st out of 64 schools participating in the event. The team designed and built their robot in only six weeks from two containers of parts. When completed, it was crated and shipped by Federal Express on the shipping due date. The construction occurred after school and on weekends.
Ian Apted, Erik Beck, Cody Crossley, Robert Evans, and Erik Pedersen represented the “CV Bears III” team at the event. Stephen Lucas and Cody Crossley programmed the robot. Mark and Scott Crossen, and Austin Pruitt worked on the robot but were not able to attend the event.
The event took place in the Seattle Arena. For each round, three school teams were randomly picked to compete against 3 other schools and the scores for the winners were tracked for placement. This year’s contest featured a very slick surface where the robots pulled trailers and collected soccer sized balls. The team that got the most balls in the other team’s trailers won. There is always a 20 second time at the beginning that the robots must move autonomously. Then the students drive the robots for 2 more minutes to score points. Students must program the robot to move by itself for the 20 seconds and also must program the radio frequency and joy stick to motor control pathways. Central Valley School District received donations and support materials from Wagstaff Inc, Jacob’s Upholstery & Patio, Altec Inc, Ed Mitchel, Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce, and Central Valley School District. The team advisors were Mr. Wellington, Mr. Wardsworth, and Mr. Hein. Teams from Central Valley High School, West Valley High School, East Valley High School, and Lewis and Clark High School shared bus transportation costs and road together to and from the event.
The three days in Seattle were intense and exciting for the students. The students are very proud of their robot and how it performed at the event.
