BearBot II (2008)

Update: Central Valley High Schools TSA students have been building a
robot called Bearbot II for the FIRST Robotics Competition held in Tacoma, Washington in March. The goal of the robot is to wirelessly
drive around and place large ball 42" onto a
platform. The robot can be a blocker, herder, or a platform to load a ball onto a 6'5" rack. With engineering help from Lloyd industries, Wagstaff industries and a
six thousand dollar grant from NASA, Kim Wellington, Rich Hein, and Alan Wardsworth
have guided ten CV students in the construction of this years entry.
With the robot shipping out on February 20th, the six weeks set aside
have flown by for teachers and students.

We are a group of students and mentors who meet at Central Valley High
School everyday after school in the CTE department to learn about and
build robots. We compete in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition
of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition, in which we get 6
weeks to design, build, and program a robot to compete with and against
other high school teams at a 3-day regional event. The challenge is
different each year, but our skills continue to grow as our team gains
experience.

Day One
After a great start where our robot was the only bot to put the ball back on the stand we opened with two wins and a early lead. In round three Bearbot II toke a shot to the arm which broke the hinge and we lost round 3. In round four we tied which placed us in 15th.

Day Two
After a great opening day lots of duct tape, welding, and epoxy Bear Bot II suffered several penalties (we are still not sure why) dropping us to 26th place out of 31. We rebounded after arm and tank repair to finish 23 overall which is the best finish from the east of Washington. Great job to all our sponsors, instructors, and students. We are already working on next years Bear Bot 3.
