Central Valley Kindergarten Center

Our new Kindergarten Center will be a wonderful place for young students!

More than 230 kindergarten students from Greenacres Elementary and Liberty Lake Elementary are expected to attend their first year of school at the Central Valley Kindergarten Center in September 2006. Located at 1512 N. Barker Road, the building was built as an elementary school and is uniquely suited to house our youngest students. The building, formerly Barker Learning Center, will receive a facelift over the summer months to create a bright, welcoming environment for student learning.

The Central Valley Kindergarten Center was created by the School Board on April 24, 2006, to temporarily house all kindergarten students from Greenacres and Liberty Lake Elementary schools until a construction bond is passed by voters and a new elementary school opens in the eastern part of the district. Students will return to their home schools to attend first grade with their classmates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Will there be bus transportation?
A. Yes.
All kindergarten students will be transported together to and from their home schools -- Greenacres Elementary or Liberty Lake Elementary -- on a school bus "shuttle." Parents may drop off and meet their children at their home school or may opt to provide their own transportation to the Kindergarten Center. Students who arrive by bus at their home school will board the shuttle to and from the Kindergarten Center. It is anticipated that morning bus routes to Greenacres and Liberty Lake elementary schools will run a little earlier and afternoon routes home will run a little later to accommodate the transfer of students to and from the Kindergarten Center shuttle. Experience tells us that five-year-olds love to ride the big yellow bus!

Q. How will students be assigned to classrooms?
A. The principals of Greenacres and Liberty Lake Elementary schools will assign students to classrooms, just as they would for students in grades 1-5. Students assigned to classrooms will move as a unit, with their teacher, to the Kindergarten Center. Once the school year begins, new students enrolling in kindergarten will be blended into classrooms as class size allows. Every effort will be made to keep students together with their neighborhood friends, since they will be returning together to their home elementary schools for first grade.

Q. Who will work in the Kindergarten Center?
A. All current kindergarten teachers and staff will follow students to the new building. Joanne Comer has been appointed as building administrator to oversee operations. The Kindergarten Center's full-time secretary will be Beverly Burkhalter. A media specialist (librarian) will also work in the building. Music and physical education will be included in the curriculum for all-day Kindergarten students.

Q. Will the building be renovated before it opens as a Kindergarten Center?
A. A variety of improvements are planned to create a special place for kindergarten students. These improvements include new doors and windows, fresh paint inside and out, flooring and sidewalk upgrades, improved play area, upgraded cooling capability in classrooms, expanded parking for parents and telephones installed in every classroom.

Q. What steps are you taking to ensure student safety?
A. Student safety is a top priority in all Central Valley schools. Security measures include employee name badges, visitor check-in, only one unlocked door to the outside, supervisors posted when students are outside on the playground and/or boarding buses. Telephones installed in every classroom are also a safety precaution.

More information will be posted here as details are finalized. Call the Public Information Office at 228-5405 for assistance.
