Central Valley Able Learner Program

Support For Highly Capable Elementary Students

Program Fact Sheet: Changes for 2008/09 School Year (pdf)

Program Calendar

Mission

The Able Learner Program, in keeping with Central Valley’s mission, creates opportunities for each participant to develop to the maximum of his/her potential.  We recognize that the academic needs of intellectually gifted students are different from the general population of students. The focus of the program is to provide instruction commensurate with the exceptional abilities and diverse interests of these children.

Program Information
The Able Learner Program is a pull-out model serving students in grades 2 through 5. Central Valley School District defines the gifted and talented as students whose general mental development is significantly accelerated beyond that of their chronological peers.  These students demonstrate remarkable potential of high performance in the areas of general intellectual ability, specific academic aptitude, creative or productive thinking, and peer leadership ability.  Therefore, they require specialized services and activities in order to develop their capabilities to the fullest extent.  This definition would serve to identify two percent of our student population.

Students Served

The Able Learner Program currently serves up to 214 students who reside within the Central Valley School District boundaries.

Selection

Any student residing in the Central Valley School District may be referred by a parent or teacher.  All candidates are screened using Washington State guidelines to determine  eligibility for individual testing.  Students who qualify for further consideration after screening are given an individual intelligence assessment.  Qualified candidates are admitted to the program.
