In first grade we work hard to motivate students to write on their own.  We use a workshop model to do this.  Each workshop begins with a short minilesson by the teacher.  The teacher models using specific skills in front of the student.  The students are then invited to write on their own.  The students self select their topics within each unit of study.  Following the independent writing time we meet again in a share circle.  Students proudly share their "work in progress" with the class.  At the end of each unit (approximately 1 month) students select a favorite work within the unit to publish.  When each student has completed a published book we have a publishing party to celebrate!
