Description of Course:
7th grade social studies in general covers: Medieval and Renaissance Europe as well as American history up to the Jefferson Presidency. The class will have entry tasks; daily reading, writing, and we will also create many projects throughout the year.
The 7th grade language arts program consists of several learning areas: reading, writing, speaking, listening, spelling, vocabulary and grammar. The purpose of this class is to aid the student in obtaining necessary communication skills.
The literature course of study for 7th grade language arts includes selections from the anthology along with district approved novels. Writing is also an important component of the program which requires preplanning, drafting and final processing of papers.
Learning Objectives (for the Year) stated in Terms of Learning Outcomes:
1. Understand the role geography plays in developing culture.
2. To know the different economic systems that existed.
3. Identify the different political systems and how they affected people’s daily lives.
4. Identify the different religious and social systems and what role they played in people’s daily lives.
5. Explain how trade and the movement of people and ideas affect cultures.
6. To know how the U.S. Became a Nation and the problems it faced.
7. Understand the principles of the Declaration of Independence and The Constitution.
8. Explain what the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution reveal about Americas past, present, and future.
9. Understand how the government is structured and how it runs.
10. Describe how the U.S. conducts relations with other nations and organizations
11. Understand how the U.S. expanded and why.
12. The student understands and uses different skills and strategies to read.
13. The student understands the meaning of what is read.
14. The student reads different materials for a variety of purposes.
15. The student sets goals and evaluates progress to improve reading.
16. The student writes clearly and effectively.
17. The student writes in a variety of forms for different audiences and purposes.
18. The student understands and uses the steps of the writing process.
19. The student analyzes and evaluates the effectiveness of written work.

Grading Policy:
Students are graded on participation, in-class/homework assignments, silent sustained reading, quizzes, writing assignments, assessments, and projects.
I follow the Central Valley School District Grading Policy (11pt. /60-100%)
Strike Policy: In order to attend the end of the Trimester activities students can not have 3 or more strikes. Strikes are received from office disciplinary actions, classroom disciplinary actions, or multiple ZAPs.
Late Work: Students are expected to turn work in on time (exceptions made for excused absences) if they don’t the ZAP program is utilized. The 3rd ZAP is considered a Strike and every subsequent ZAP is a Strike.

Classroom expectations: I ask my students to follow the 6 pillars of character in and out of my classroom Trustworthiness, Responsibility, Respect, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship. T.R.R.F.C.C.
· Be respectful of others
· No eating or drinking in class (Water if there is a note from home)
· Be honest
NOTE: Cheating and Plagiarism is not acceptable and will result in a failing grade on the test/assignment with an opportunity to make amends.
a. Plagiarism. Plagiarism is defined as use of intellectual material produced by another person without acknowledging its source. For example:
· Wholesale copying of passages from works of others into an assignment, paper, discussion board posting, or thesis or dissertation without acknowledgment.
· Using the views, opinions, or insights of another without acknowledgment.
· Paraphrasing another person’s characteristic or original phraseology, metaphor, or other literary device without acknowledgment.
Discipline Steps:
· Warning
· 5 minute cool off in hall
· Issued a Strike, Detention & call home
· Referral
· Options retained by the teacher
· Removal for that entire period to team teacher and Issued a Strike
· Student will call home/work and explain at that moment
· Steps may be skipped if situation warrants it
