Description of Course:
It is my pleasure to welcome you to 6th grade social studies. This class covers: Ancient Civilizations including Egyptian, Chinese, Roman, Greek and People of the Stone Age. In addition, students will learn about the 5 Themes of Geography and the role it plays in our world cultural structure.
The 6th grade language arts program consists of several learning areas: reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, spelling, vocabulary and grammar. In addition, the literature course of study for 6th grade language arts includes selections from the anthology along with district approved novels. Writing is also an important component of the program which requires preplanning, drafting, revising and final processing of papers.
Texts and Readings Used in the Class
Required Texts and Readings:
1. SSR (Silent Sustained Reading) Chapter Book is required everyday
2. Harcourt Brace Social Studies- Ancient Civilizations
3. EMC: Literature and the Language Arts (TEXT)
4. Core novel: True Confessions of Charolette Doyle
Grading Policy:
Students are graded on completion of the learning targets, quizzes, writing assignments, assessments, and projects.
I follow the Central Valley School District Grading Policy (60-100%).
Late Work: Students are expected to turn work in on time (exceptions made for excused absences) if they don’t the ZAP program is utilized.
Required Items for Class:
- 1 ½ to 2 inch 3 Ring Binder with clear plastic cover (prefer white)
- 6 binder separators
- loose leaf lined paper
- Red, Blue, Green, and Black Pen
- #2 Pencils and a Blue/Black Pen
- 1- Five Subject Spiral Notebook
- 2 folders (1 for writing, 1 for reading)
Optional Items for Class:
- small Post-It notepads (any color is fine)
- colored pencils
- eraser
- 3 ring binder pencil pouch
- Box of Kleenex is very helpful (I will store it in the classroom)
Classroom expectations: I ask my students to follow the 6 pillars of character in and out of my classroom Trustworthiness, Responsibility, Respect, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship.
· Be respectful of others/ no put-down
· Be honest
NOTE: Cheating and Plagiarism is not allowed and will result in a failing grade until make up test or work can be completed at my discretion.
* This includes using another student’s work to finish your own homework during the morning when you arrive in the cafeteria!!! See me if you need extra help!
