2007 Meritorious Service Awards
In 2007, the district celebrated the exemplary contributions of certificated employees, classified employees, teams and community volunteers to learning and teaching with the presentation of the annual Meritorious Service Awards. The Board of Directors presents these awards annually. For 2007, the School Board selected district-wide Meritorious Service Award recipients from among 76 individual and 15 team nominees and presented the awards in March 2007.
2007 Meritorious Service Award Recipients:
• Certificated Employee: Glenna Bouge, Central Valley High School
A strong and positive advocate for students, Bouge works to maximize each student’s potential in her role as Assistant Principal. She treats each individual she encounters with warmth, dignity and respect and often goes above and beyond to insure the needs of each student, parent and staff member are heard and addressed to the best of her ability.
• Community Member/Organization: Shawn Higgins Foundation, Greenacres Elementary School
For the past five years, the Shawn Higgins Foundation has provided monetary support for Greenacres Elementary students and families. In addition to funding a reading tutor to work with struggling students including those who are learning English, the Foundation provides gourmet meals, books and educational activities for families at least four times each year during the school’s Family Literacy Nights.
• Classified Employee: Jesus Moreno, Central Valley High School
His positive attitude and school spirit have helped to develop a positive climate and create a close connection with students. A part of the school’s custodian team, Moreno is a regular participant in the staff halftime show at the Stinky Sneaker basketball game and dresses up on spirit days. His positive outlook on life is infectious!
• Team: Central Valley Kindergarten Center
The entire staff of the newly-created Central Valley Kindergarten Center came together this year to create a great place for children to begin their educational journey. Every individual on the staff – teachers, custodians, secretaries, paraeducators, supervisory assistants, support staff and childcare staff – have helped make the Kindergarten Center the best place for staff and about 240 young students to work, learn and grow.
• Team: HEART Transportation Team
This 21-member team includes 17 bus drivers are involved in the daily pick up and delivery of homeless students from shelters and safe houses across Spokane County to their neighborhood Central Valley schools. Arranging the transport of over 475 homeless K-12 students, this team understands that consistent school attendance contributes to academic achievement and provides emotional stability to students whose lives are fragmented as a result of extraordinary life circumstances.
